Potatoes absorb Wi-Fi signals and are used to test/improve internet signals on airplanes


While major airlines offer in-flight Wi-Fi on many flights, the signal strength can be spotty. Airlines and aircraft makers have been striving to improve this with the growing use of wireless devices and the number of people who don't want to be disconnected, even 35,000 feet up.

Airplane company uses sacks of potatoes as stand-ins for passengers as they worked to eliminate weak spots in in-flight wireless signals. They needed full planes to get accurate results during signal testing, but they couldn't ask people to sit motionless for days while data was gathered. 

It turns out that potatoes – because of their water content and chemistry – absorb and reflect radio wave signals much the same way as the human body does, making them suitable substitutes for airline passengers. Passenger seats on a decommissioned plane were loaded with huge sacks of the tubers for several days as signal strengths were checked. Wireless signals fluctuate randomly in the enclosed space of an aeroplane cabin as people move about. This means that signal distribution is uneven throughout the cabin, with weaker and stronger connectivity in different seats.

Why is there a tiny hole in airplane windows?


The hole in the bottom of your airplane window is actually a very important safety feature. It's all-too-easy to let your mind wander when you're confined to a tiny box of space while hurtling 40,000 feet in the air at hundreds of miles per hour, but rest assured: every single window on the airplane has the same hole. More officially, it's called a breather hole and it's used to regulate the amount of pressure that passes between the window's inner and outer panes. In short, the system ensures that the outer pane bears the most pressure so that if there were a situation that caused added strain on the window, it's the outside panel that gives out (meaning you can still breathe). As shown in the Boeing 737 maintenance manual (the most widely produced jet airliner in aviation history), the window structure consists of three layers of acrylic – a tough, transparent and flexible resin – although only two of them have an actual structural function.


As can be noted in the diagram shown above, the breather hole is located in the middle layer of the window. This little puncture acts as a bleed valve ensuring that the pressure between the last two layers and the cabin always remains the same. This is necessary as a way of preserving the middle layer (the extra safety one) so it is only exposed to severe pressure differences in cases of emergency – that is, if the last layer the window is fractured in some way.

Furthermore, any possible cracks in the outermost layer of the window is enough to justify an emergency landing – even if the middle layer is fully capable, in principle, to maintain the appropriate cabin pressure conditions


The breather hole also serves to prevent freezing and fogging between the outer layers of the window.

Periodic Table's 7th Row Completed With Discovery Of Four New Elements


Officials from the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) have confirmed the discovery of elements 113, 115, 117, and 118, announcing that there is now enough evidence to give them permanent places on the periodic table, which means they’ll also need new, official names.

You won’t find these four elements in nature - they are synthetic elements that can only be produced in the lab, and because they decay in a matter of seconds, their existence has been extremely difficult to confirm. Until now, elements 113, 115, 117, and 118 had temporary names and positions on the seventh row of the periodic table because scientists have struggled to create them more than once.

The three remaining elements, 115, 117, and 118 - known temporarily as ununpentium (Uup), ununseptium (Uus), and ununoctium (Uuo), respectively - will also get new names.

The organisation advises that the new elements can be named after a mythological concept, a mineral, a place or country, a property, or a scientist, and will be presented for public review for five months before a final decision about the new official name and symbol is made.

The Black spots on French Fries are pockets of excess sugar


Some french fries have a few unusual marks on them. These marks, which are best described as small black spots on the french fry, are something that fast food lovers around the world have become accustomed to; but if you're trying to cut back on your sugar intake, you may be surprised to know that those black spots on fries are pockets of sugar.

The reason for these spots appearing on your delicious deep fried snack is because if french fries are stored in a refrigerator, part of the starch on the potato turns into sugar. When the fries are being cooked, the high temperatures cause the sugar on the outside to cook before the inside is fully cooked, which leaves black marks on the fries.

To get rid of these spots, all you have to do is let your fries sit in water that is 90 degrees Celsius for a few minutes! This process will cause the sugar on the fry to spread out evenly and your snack will become an even color.

Norwegians pay half tax in November so everyone has more money for Christmas




The Norwegian government offers a tax break to its citizens in the month of November so they have some extra money right before Christmas the following month

There are many things that are done to prepare for the Christmas season – even the government in Norway gets in on the action.  One unusual tradition in Norway is the November tax break.  All earnings in November are taxed half the regular amount.  As most employers pay wages around the middle of the following month, it means the extra money in November comes in right before Christmas in December.  So November is the time when employees make the most of their work hours and might even put in a little over time.

The “X” in “XMAS” doesn't take the “CHRIST” out of “CHRISTMAS”


Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ every December 25th, also known as Christmas Day. Although the exact date of his birth is not known, it was placed between 7 and 2 BC based on the two canonical gospels of the New Testament. Christmas is a time for remembering, a time to share the goodness of your heart with others, and for expressing with words and gifts what someone means to you. It is a chance to make wishes come true and to give something from your heart.

Myth: “Xmas” is a non-religious name / spelling for “Christmas”.

It turns out, “Xmas” is not a non-religious version of “Christmas”. The “X” is actually indicating the Greek letter “Chi”, which is short for the Greek, meaning “Christ”. So “Xmas” and “Christmas” are equivalent in every way except their lettering.
Even though there is much debate as to the exact date of His birth, Christians generally accept December 25th as the day of Jesus’ birth. The word “Christmas” comes from the Old English word “Cristes maesse” or “Christ’s mass” which was written to form one word starting in the 14th century. It was derived from the Greek word “Christos” (Christ) and the Latin word “missa” (mass).

The word “Xmas,” on the other hand, is used as an abbreviation of the word “Christmas.” The letter “X” comes from the Greek letter “chi,” the first letter in the Greek word for “Christ,” and “maesse” from the Old English word for “mass.” The word is considered as an informal form of the word “Christmas” and, as such, should not be used in formal writing. Christmas or Christmas Day is the holiday which is celebrated by Christians as the birth of Jesus Christ while Xmas is the abbreviation of the word.

The word “Christmas” is the spelling most preferred by most Christians while businesses and advertisements prefer to use the word “Xmas” because it is more concise.

Antarctic Desert, not the Sahara desert, is the largest desert on Earth


A desert is a place that receives little or no precipitation. Although we think of deserts as hot places, they can be cold regions too.


To be considered a desert an area must have less than 250 millimeters of annual rainfall. Using that criteria, the continent of Antarctica is the largest desert on Earth. It has less than 51mm of precipitation per year and little or no vegetation. The Antarctic Desert is the largest on Earth at 13.8 million sq km. In comparison, the Sahara is only 9.1 million sq km.

Popcorn was the first food to be cooked in a microwave


The first food deliberately cooked with Spencer's microwave was popcorn, and the second was an egg, which exploded in the face of one of the experimenters.

The match-made-in-heaven union between popcorn and microwaves goes way back. Way back, in fact, to the very beginning of microwave ovens in the first place.

The first foodstuff to ever be microwaved was chocolate when an engineer at the Raytheon Corporation, Percy Spencer, was working on an active radar set and happened to have a chocolate bar in his lab coat. The microwave radiation from the radar equipment melted the chocolate and on that fateful day in 1945 the idea for microwave cooking was born.

Spencer set up a prototype of the first microwave oven and promptly kicked off the link between popcorn and microwaves forever by throwing some popcorn into the device, making popcorn the first intentionally microwaved food. Needless to say, the popcorn experiment went much better than the follow up experiment which involved microwaving a whole egg (which promptly exploded in the face of one of the experimenters).

Within two years, commercial microwave ovens were on the market (albeit at an enormous cost equivalent to $53,000 in today’s dollars) and by the end of the 1960s, more compact and economical models began appearing in homes. By the mid-1980s, approximately 25 percent of American homes had a microwave and by the end of the 1990s it had reached over 90 percent.

Everyone comes into the world with a bit of gold to their name. Our bodies contain about 0.2 mg of gold. Most of that gold is diffused with our blood. However, you’d need to bleed 40,000 people dry just to collect enough blood to make one 8g sovereign.

Gold even found in plants like Douglas fir and honeysuckle absorb it very efficiently from the soil. However, the amount of money needed to extract that gold just wouldn’t be worth it.

The most abundant gold mine on the planet is the sea where there are 10 million tons of the shinny stuff just floating around.
